Using publicly available COVID-19 data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, Beacon Platform explores the rise in the number of global infections.

The first step is automating the daily collection of data so that our research can stay current.

Next, we make this data available in a structured database and explore this data via business intelligence tools.

Going further, we explore projections into the future by sketching a model in Jupyter Notebooks, which can be productionized, shared, and extended by colleagues.

Finally, we take our model and expose it via Beacon Platform’s Glint UI framework in an application. The application allows us to see the historical data in different ways; for example, we compare countries from a common starting threshold of cases to truly see the differences in the rise of COVID 19 infections from country to country.

Most importantly, the application allows us to tweak our model projections. The projections incorporate interesting concepts such as % Asymptomatic, Rates of Social Distancing, and Rates of Testing through time.

Conclusions

Using Beacon Platform the exploration of historical data, and the development of a simple model to project cases forward in time gives a deeper understanding of what is happening in the world. This model is far too simplistic to give definite conclusions about what will really happen in the future, but it helps us to understand the importance of recommendations such as social distancing, and increased testing.
